What We Do 

At the center of House Museum is belief in art’s ability to transform realities, both physical and ideological. We collaborate with multidisciplinary artists at three levels—community, applied, and integrated—in order to engage communities through time. At the highest level, integrated art becomes a permanent part of each historic landmark, generating transformative thought for years to come, while both community and applied art relate to opening events and temporary programs built around each historic site.

Landmark exhibitions. We envision artworks for and from historic sites, bringing dormant landmarks back into public life. At the John Rowland Mansion, a National Register property in the San Gabriel Valley, 11 site-specific artworks marked its 2024 reopening with the La Puente Valley Historical Society.

Preservation in action. We document, stabilize, and adapt historic structures, especially when they are at risk of being lost. Project Chimney saved six chimneys from the 2025 Palisades Fire before demolition, with a conservation plan informed by the Getty Conservation Institute.

Site-based learning. We bring students onto active preservation sites as fieldwork. Our free Site-Based Art Learning program began with Palisades Charter High School, and its extending deeper as a conservation internship program.

Research and design studies. Digital reconstructions, 3D documentation and design proposals for landmarks we cannot yet enter or rebuild, from the Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol, Ukraine, to the Henry O. Tanner House in Philadelphia.
